More José James

So James got me hooked on that other James, José James. If you're feeling him like I'm feeling him then right after you finish copping The Dreamer, click here and grab Gilles Peterson's free one hour podcast with the dude from last summer. I hope for big big things for this cat.

oksoundsgood addendum:
plus as a bonus, here goes the b side of the track that we posted yesterday called "Visions of Violet" produced by Flying Lotus. They are to be collabing on an album, that will be released on Blue Note!!! Y'all aint ready,wait.. Yall ready?

Visions of Violet Ft. Jose James - Flying Lotus

Wale - The Mixtape About Nothing

You know you are a geek when you set your Google Calendar alerts a few weeks in advance to remind you when to download a mixtape....OK, let's not even talk about it.

Wale is one of the top TOP MC's in the game (I gotta stop saying the game, I feel so generic, will think of something else...) at the moment. Hailing from DC and of some of the finest West African extraction, he is doing BIG HUGE GIGANTIC things (a track with The Roots, a remix feat Lil Wayne, a crisp new contract with Jimmy Iovine) and is only going to go higher. Don't get left behind folks. One day you'll tell your grandkids you were there, downloading that mixtape ahead of the curve, watching the phenonemon unfold.

Download link here.

Q-Tip - Fever (prod. dilla)

So, on this blog Imma try and refrain from posting too much Dilla-related stuff, since I can talk about the man until I'm blue in the face; everything is too good and so special to me and mine ears. But this is a nice little track from what is supposed to be Q-Tip's upcoming album.

Q- Tip has already had like 2 albums pushed back to shelved, and hopefully this one doesnt get that same treatment cause he's still got it, I feel. Anyways, enjoy this track which is from an old Dilla beat tape...and if you really into it, check him performing it on Jimmy Kimmel here

Jose James... get to know one!

Jose James is a young jazz vocalist from New York signed to Gilles Peterson's Brownswood Recordings. Affiliation with GP already says a lot, as the man commands a lot of respect with his great taste. Anyway James' album The Dreamer is very worthy of copping, and here is a video from one of the tracks from that album, a cover of Freestyle Fellowship's Park Bench People. Enjoy and look out for a collab album between Jose James and another one of the faves Flying Lotus.

update: here is the original Freestyle Fellowship version

Park Bench People - Freestyle Fellowship

Return to the Classics #1

I am a simple man, still mesmerized by things that dont really impress most people anymore such as birds flying for instance. The moonwalk and MJ's other signature moves and dances (esp. his famous pop and lock @ 57 seconds) are things that will always amaze and mesmerize me just like watching a bird fly, and all with a classic tune as the backdrop. It dont get much better than this right here. Unfadable!

Africa Meets The Balkans- Good Things Happen

Are people still using the word mash-up? Why? I am just going to use mix and if I am feeling fancy then I'll say blend.

Anyway here is this great mix I just grabbed off of the fabulous Masalacism blog. West Africa (where our mother is from) and the Balkans (where I live) come together to make ... happy. A perfect little blend, I'd say.

The Durutti Column

Yo James,

I got hip to The Durutti Column by way of The Tough Alliance and quickly downloaded their album LC and have been listening to it non-stop. It is great chill riddims to work to and man is it skillfully done!

Check out this 1998 performance of Jacqueline. I think you're gonna likey.

Laka

Laka was the entry from Bosnia and Herzegovina for the Eurovision song contest. He is a total nut, but he is my absolute favorite person this week. I actually sat here and watched him on Bosnian television (with handy translator by my side)the other day and when he talked about his time in NYC working at a moving company and how awesome the black people were to him, it brougt a nostalgic tear to my eye.

Anyway this dude is like a Bosnian hybrid of Peewee Herman, Manu Chao, and Hutz from Gogol Bordello, but incredibly humble despite his artsy ambitions. This song isn't for everyone but I totally adore it and the performance!

Janelle Monae is Cooler Than You

I am sorry to have to be the one to tell you this, but Janelle Monae just got here and she is pretty much cooler than most of the kids on the schoolyard. She is endorsed by the cool people (like Erykah Badu and Outkast) and signed to the label of some pop music bigwig. She is a fanciful mix of such beloved artists as Erykah Badu, Andre 3000, Elvis, (Jackson Five era) Michael Jackson, Grace Jones, James Brown, Prince...and then there are so many pieces of her that can only be credited to her own creative mind. And to top it off she is ridiculously cute.

I think she is only going to rise higher on her cool game.

Check out this live performance:

The Week That Was - The Good Life

This is the other band of one guy from Field Music. I have been bumping this song for the last couple of days. Good summer groove, methinks.

kinda feeling this

James: new common track

Camille: I agree. I am ready for him to go in another direction. The die-hard fans are angry, I know, but fuck the purists. Plus I am riding for Pharrell again, so let's go. Now, when am I gonna get the video of Common doing the robot dance to this track? I DEMAND IT!

This song is bangin for a ska track. It came on and I got like Jesus in my bones.

Guns of Navarone - The Skatalites

D'angelo - go back to that thing

5:11 PM me: i am still messing around with the website layout
looking for something more simple
the blog
5:12 PM James: ah yes
Camille: i see you put something up there already
James: wow just watched thi s lil dangelo vid/ mini doc from the voodoo
days
yup sure didly
well send it thru

d'angelo is one of fav musicians , i really feel like he is our generation's al green/ marvin gaye, and as myself and the legions of true fans patiently await a return album , we can only ruminate through the old collection of released and unreleased material. this here is some unreleased gold that i believe is a voodoo era outtake (which btw ?uestlove says he has hard drives full of, please release them!!!). so lets go back to this thing.\\
