Gilles Peterson(GP) rundown -09/24/08

I'm back in town and way jetlagged but I am feenin for new music, so I was lucky to get back in front of my computer on a fresh new GP day.

Here are my faves from this week's show

Lars Bartkuhn
– ‘Goodbye Dancing Hello God’ (Sonar Kollektiv)

Jazzanova Feat. Jose James – ‘Little Bird’ (Verve)
A long sprawling mellow jazz track featuring my singer of the year.

Azymuth – ‘Butterfly’ (Far Out Recordings)
Funky funky stuff from Brazilian legends. The trio features Ivan Conti who collab'd with Madlib for the Jackson Conti project (check this!) earlier this year.

Kenny Garret Feat. Pharoah Saunders – ‘Sketches Of MD’ (Mack Avenue)
Accomplished sax player Kenny Garret drags out the legend Saunders for this popping little track.

Crown Heights Affair
– ‘Dreaming A Dream’ (De Lite Records)
Good disco funk boogie that made me want to bust out some roller skates, flip out my hair, and get to the rink. I gotta get with this band.

Many new posts coming extra soon!

DJ Mujava - "Township Funk"

I had been hearing this track around for a while and never knew who it was until my boy hipped me to the official video last weekend. DJ Mujava, apparently out of Pretoria, South Africa is the artist and this song has become a hit - the video with the great dancing only makes it that much more the jam. get ready to wind ya waste now- shake them hips now- do it do it do it...

not to mention the first minute or so of the video is hillarious!!

Gilles Peterson(GP) rundown -09/04/08

This week's show was excellent, the whole show was great! Thus making it a bit difficult to do, but here are some of the highlights:

Unknown – 'The Dream Instrumental' (Test)- Like the title says, unknown, but wish we knew, lol. Anyways, a great intro.

Madvillain - 'Drainos' (Stones Throw)- This from the aforementioned(here), just quietly released Madvillain Remixes, more solid Madlib beats.

Bama & The Family – ‘Feeling Good’ (Truth and Soul) - Smooth ass track.

El Michels – 'Mungs tsio Myself (Alternate Mix)' (Truth and Soul) -
El Michaels Affair and the Daptones have got it down when it comes to the funk/soul not too many can do that and pull it off so well.

London Philhormonic Orchestra – 'Stairway to Heaven' (Test) - Nice smooth orchestrated track.

Mark Murphy – 'On the Red Clay' (Muse) - Not up on Mark Murphy yet, but grreat intro and does "Red Clay" ever get old? No!

Madlib and Frezna – Yo Yo Affair Part 1 and 2' (bbe)- First heard this on an impeccable BBC Quasimto Madlib mix back in 2005 that i still listen to, glad to see this coming out on the upcoming BBE Album.

Janelle Monae – 'Smile' (Wondaland Arts Society) - Charismatic performer, check her out if you get a chance- so far im impressed with her very much- what a great voice.

Milton Nascimento Jobim Trio – 'Tudo Que Voce Podie Ser' (EMI) - Brasillian legend still releasing great music ... I love it!!

Hank Ballard – 'With Your Sweet Loving Self' (Soul Brother Records)

Raphael Saadiq – '100 Yard Dash' - Saw him in concert perform this the other week, GP only plays it for a hot sec but check the whole track, its a nice soul number.

Kanye WOWEST

For some odd reason I ended up watching the MTV VMAs the other night for the first time in probably 10 years. It was a horrible production full of performances by bands who'd mostly just been discovered a few days before the show. But I gallantly made it to the end of that broadcast by some mixture of foolishness and fortitude and was rewarded by these beautiful Kanye West performance. The man stunned me, completely. He is becoming an artiste!
