GP Double Header

Gilles in Ljubljana! Photo source

This week we are not only treated to our regularly scheduled Gilles Peterson show, we also have a special Radio1 Story where Gilles audio-tours (my favorite city) NYC and connects with Pharoah Monche, Bilal, Erika Rose of Sa-Ra (heading out to Brooklyn for a Badu show), and many many others.

So listen to that first, and then roll back over to the regular show (another great week!), and check out the regular show most especially for the utterly soul-chilling Olafur Arnolds, Fionn Peters, Portico session from Maida Vale studio.

Tigerstyle f. Vybz Kartel, Mangi Mahal and Nikitta, "Balle! Shava! (Sinden Remix)"

Outside the ground is covered in inches thick of snow, and when the wind picks up even a little it is bitingly cold, but inside is straight HEAT because OKSG just passed along this jammy jam from Glaswegian Sikh bhangra massive Tigerstyle, which I foolishly overlooked (hey, I was on a plane!) when it appeared on FADER blog in August.

Here's a preview of the track.

Get your weekend started right by heading over and downloading this toasty hot track.

As a bonus, here's them doing another version of it live..... I don't even wanna talk about how I missed out on seeing these dudes live in NYC. Won't make that mistake again.

Now, it's about that time....

Yes, people, the holiday times are upon us. In honor of that, I recently published my first piece on AC with 10 great tracks to add to a modern holiday/Christmas mix.
Do be kind and support a sista by heading over there to check out my selecktions!

The last 3 two and a half weeks have been the era of hope, damn- this is real real good news. One of the few things i can applaud the Bush Administration on.

Classics - Dylan and Cash

This might sound like it's coming out of total leftfield, but I am at home thoroughly enjoying some great 1969 Dylan and Cash studio session recordings (yes, they're performing together!). You see, a little funny thing about me and OKSG, is that we grew up in a house where we would occasionally be awoken to the country musical croonings of such singers as Randy Travis and the classic Jim Reeves. Yes, our parents also bumped a little country, so we got love in that direction.

If you also gots love, go over and grab these incredible session tracks (for free! free! free!) over at Aquarium Drunkard.

Jay Electronica - Exhibit A

After much anticipation, Jay Electronica has dropped some of the new.
Beats by the most respect Just Blaze (producer for such biggies as Saigon, Kanye, Jay-Z, and tons more).

Now we all have to just sit and wait for the whole album to drop. 2009-- so close, yet so far away.

That'll Learn Me

For some reason, I was asleep on the Brownswood blog and no one woke me up to tell me that my dude Omar from Mars Volta was working on his first solo release (available on MP3 now, cd and vinyl forthcoming).
Good look ST! Steady heat is coming from thataway.

Here's a little sample-ito.

Jazzanova

I am sorry this blog has been spotty as of late. It's a combination of not really finding any good new music worth your time (hey it's the end of the year) and general business.

I just wanted to jump on here though and tell you to cop that new Jazzanova album "Of All The Things". This is a collective of four German dudes who've churned out and album of HIGH (best of 2008) QUALITY soul and jazz with guest spots from the likes of Phonte and two Brownswood goodies: the great Ben Westbeech (dude is gonna have to get his own post soon) and Jose James!

Here is their EPK with some snippets of tracks

The year is almost over, close it out with good tunage! And if you're in Berlin, by chance, roll out to the album release with Ben Westbeech and Gilles Peterson.

R.I.P. Miriam Makeba - Mama Afrika

Singer, anti-apartheid figure Makeba dies

As a child my mother forced my brother and I to watch Paul Simon's Concert in Graceland like every weekend, and I still know the words to almost all the songs by heart. When I got older my mother gave me Miriam's autobiography to read, and believe me this beautiful and mad stylish singer was not just a great musician, she was also an incredible activist and a tough and bad ass African woman. Definitely major hero. Respect.

Please give a warm welcome to...

brian chilling, wait who that in the background?

Please give a warm welcome to the acetoace posting family, Mr. Brian "pajbre(sometimes)" Rogers.

Brian is a lover of music and always has some new music to hip me to everytime we talk. As far as digging for new sounds, he is always checking out some new jams whether it be UK dubstep, brazillian soul, black spiritual jazz from the 70s or whatever it may be. I might even go as far as calling him an un credentialed ethno- musicologist. I think i trump him on hip hop though, lol - but this cat was the first to put me up on Animal Collective and also Alice Coltrane some years back and those two alone, especially the latter opened my mind big time.

So look out for posts coming soon from Brian as the Ace to Ace movement is now 3 deep straight mobbing.

Flying Lotus "Camel" (Nosaj thing Remix)

Don't know much about Nosaj thing, aside that he is amongst the bevy of talented LA electronic producers alongside Flying Lotus, Samiyam, Ras G, Free the Robots, the list goes on and on. Warp had him remix a track off Flying Lotus' Los Angeles (ahem, stay tuned for Ace to Ace Best of 2008 wrap up btw). Nosaj very tastefully uses some of the same samples from the original tune as well as adding his own flavor with some nicely chopped arrangements.
