I'm so hyped on this new emcee, Kendrick Lamar, these days. First told you about him a couple months ago with this year's Section 80 mixtape/ album. Well, after playing that album out, I decided to go back to his first mixtape from last year and check it out. I'm glad I did because its just as good. O(verly).D(edicated). ~download here~ sees him rapping over some beats by the same producers who contributed to Section 80 and also a couple of instrumentals by the Legendary Roots Crew, such as the intro track here, which I've had on repeat for the past few days...

Drive - The Soundtrack

I this week saw the newest Ryan Gosling vehicle (no pun intended) Drive. To say it was intense would be an understatement. The most gripping part of the film though was not even the acting (though there was plenty of quality work, to be sure), it was the music. Gosling was quoted as saying that he wanted Drive to be "like a John Hughes movie with violence", and the soundtrack (compiled by accomplished film score composer Cliff Martinez) felt just that way, iconic 80s vibe with lots of dark and infectious beats. The last time a soundtrack clung to me like this was with Donnie Darko, but Drive's soundtrack is all the more haunting for being full of songs I had no previous association with.Take a listen to two of those great songs below and read more about the soundtrack here.

We are eagerly anticipating the new Thundercat album to come out later this month on Brainfeeder. Thundercat, who is a frequent collaborator with the likes of Erykah Badu, Sa Ra and Flying Lotus, is a bass player whose work you've surely heard. On his debut album "The Golden Age of Apocalypse", produced by Flying Lotus, him and the band will sonically explore where fusion jazz legends like George Duke and Jaco Pastorius left off.

Kendrick Lamar - Section80

This is a really really good album from up and coming rapper Kendrick Lamar out of Compton, California. He has a real nice voice and unique delivery as he narrates many a ghetto tale over real jazzy yet hard beats. This is a real refreshing album in an utterly stale hip hop environment. The fact that I'm even recommending a vocal hip hop album alone says tons of how special this album is, hehe.

Knxwledge- Hexual Sealings

This here is a nice remix album from a young producer by the name of Knxwledge. He lays down great slinky, chopped natural loops as a sonic bed for accapellas from the likes of Andre3000, J Dilla, Jay Z, Musiqsoulchild, Telepopmuzik and Faith Evans. Really soulful and fun stuff here.

Man, I'm pretty sad right now just hearing of the passing of one of my all time favorite artist. The raw and honest voice and musicianship of Mr. Gil Scott Heron has passed. I can't think of another artist who has had such a rugged existence and still shined so brilliantly thru all the trials and tribulations. His catalog which easily stretches some four decades is full of poignant moments that have symbolized movements in black America and beyond.

Here is just one of his very many contributions that has always been a favorite of mine.

Been waiting for this album for awhile and its was well worth the wait. Africa HiTech(Mark Pritchard and Steve Spacek)'s "93 Million Miles" on Warp is a nice mix of electronic and the emotive. The production is really on point as these two are seasoned veterans in the studio. I really love what they did with Sun Ra's "When There Is No Sun" on "Light the Way".

RIP to the dopest black chick who just happened to be white that the world has ever seen. During my childhood stint in the hood (childhood in Oakland, CA), I remember there being white girls like this. There was one I knew called Jamie; she lived in a house full of black people, was wiry thin with a tough mouth, and was one of the best doubledutch jumpers on the school yard --- she was way blacker than me, heck blacker than most of us. Teena Marie has a block pass (shit, black pass!) cause she built those blocks and is an important part of black history and heritage. Heck she was on Cash Money (Lil Wayne's record label) for a time!

I'm sure every hood in the US was blasting her on Monday while most whites just scratched their heads trying to remember who she was and what she sang. She was ours, through and through.

I'm claiming 2011 as the year of the electro-croon. I can feel it in the air. From Bon Iver's cry for help from the middle of the cyber-woods on Kanye's "Lost In The World" to Jamie Woon's insomniac's anthem "Night Air", 2011 is gonna be about the sultry sounds of sensitive and moody young men (and maybe some ladies) lost in the machine. Tron: The Musical, anyone?

For my Exhibit D, I present James Blake. While he's made a name for himself on thene as a promising young dubstep reversioner, it's his recent moody singer-songwriter turns that will likely blow him up in 2011. Check out the first single from his forthcoming LP, James Blake, a spaced-out and super minimalistic cover of Feist's "Limit To Your Love" that has major Antony vectors.

Keep your eyes and ears out for James (album 0ut February 2011) and other such dark ballads from little Hansels&Gretels lost in the fiber-optic forest. You just might save somebody's life.

Lil Wayne Performed 6'7 on SNL

On the fifth day of Christmas, SNL did give to us a very hot performance of Weezy doing (the best song of the end of 2010) "6'7". Normally live hip-hop is quite a snooze, but Weezy is bursting with energy and just look at how stoked the band is here! I could barely stay seated in my desk chair.

Looking forward to a 2011 full of Weezy at the tippy top of his game. Keep your nose clean, kid.

2010 may have been a shockingly amazing year for music, but I unfortunately feel uncertain whether or not I would know. I had so much going on this year, I feel like I really lagged in the music department (and it shows in the amount of posting I've done on the blog). Thanks to OKSG and the few moments I could grab to jam new sounds into my ear, there were a few albums and tracks that got heavy rotation round these parts. Here they go...

Best Albums (in no particular order)

Kanye West- My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy - like everyone else says, great rhythms, brutal honesty, hilarity, the man is at the top of his game right now

Gonjasufi- A Sufi and A Killer - utter psychedelic madness, like nothing else I heard this year. TOP HONORS!

Mark Ronson & the Business International- Record Collection - people already know I am total Mark Ronson "stan fan", and the dude did the damn thing with this album. scrapped the horns and took a hard left into a different direction and the results are GOOOD! The return of D'Angelo, the return of Boy George, the return of Duran Duran. This album is epic. I'm just waiting for someone to churn out a 10 minute mega mix of Somebody To Love Me, it's begging for it.

Erykah Badu- New Amerykah Part Two (Return Of The Ankh) - This album admittedly sounds like its mostly just outtakes from Part One, but there is enough funkiness and home truths (I'm a recovering undercover, overlover people, come on!) on there to have gotten it some hard spinnage over at my house

Aloe Blacc - Good Things - Alright, I'm not gonna lie and say this album is solid all the way through but it really has enough going on that it wormed its way into my heart over the months I've been listening to it. Not enough people are successfully putting this kinda music out (sorry John Legend, that covers album was a BAD idea. stay in your lane, bruh.)

Big Boi - Sir Luscious Left Foot: The Return of Chico Dusty - This is hip hop for that grown and sexy set, and I can't hate. I previously had doubts about Big Boi's solo abilities, but he put them to rest on this one.

12/31/10 - EDIT TO ADD :

Duran Duran's All You Need Is Now is a true return to form and for that we can thank the good lads of DD and the fanboy enthusiasm of album producer Mark Ronson
Caribou - Swim- In his ongoing quest to make sure I am always late to the party, OKSG (gee thanks, lil bro) only just dropped this gem on me the other day, but the fact that I am rushing back on here to tell y'all about it is a testament to the electro-goodness of this album. Get it!

The Mizell Brothers are hands down amongst my all time favorite producers. Their productions were imbued with a certain airy, happy vibe and spirit that you just knew when you were listening to something that they had their hand in. The artists that they collaborated with include Marvin Gaye and the Jackson5 (who they made huge hits for) but they are probably best known for their career defining albums for the likes of trumpeter Donald Byrd, flautist Bobbi Humphrey, and Johnny Hammond.

Here is a mix from a DJ Matthew Africa ,who i believe resides in the town (Oakland), that includes many of their classic productions for the aforementioned artists and more. Good work sir Matt.

Don't sleep on this one! It may be the end of summer but the Mizells make it feel like summer all year round!

It wouldnt be right for us to not acknowledge the passing of the one and only GURU of Gang Starr. His monotone voice, flow and knowledge conveyed through his lyrics were the soundtrack to many days of our lives and will continue to be so.

I vividly remember the first time I heard Gang Starr back in the early 90s from the 'Hard to Earn" album. So in this time of celebrating the man's legacy and work, I will leave you with one of my favorite joints from that very Gang Starr album that opened my ears to Mr. Gifted Universal Rhymes Unlimited.

Legendary jazz drummer Steve Reid recently passed leaving another void in the world of free jazz. Having played with everyone from the likes of James Brown, Fela Kuti, Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman, classics such as Martha &the Vandellas "Dancing in the Streets", and most recently alongside electronic producer Kieren Hebden aka Four tet, Steve has definitely gotten around and made his rhythmic mark in many circles and styles of music.

Well OKSG got us started with a hefty list of tracks I need to get my hands on, so now I step up to the mic. There is of course a tiny bit of overlap but not as much as I would have expected. Unlike OKSG, I wasn't SO thrilled about the output this year, my list of jams this year was very single-heavy and there were fewer full albums or even individual tracks that straight up wowed me. That said there was still enough good stuff to keep my playlist growing. So without further ado...

My Favorite Albums of the Year (in no particular order)

Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion
This album dominated the first half of the year for me. My first exposure to Animal Collective. A stunner of an album.

Daniel Merriweather - Love and War
The other Merriweather of the ear. I'd been eagerly awaiting this Mark Ronson-produced album since 2006, and though it took a minute to grow on me. I soon found my faves and kept it in heavy rotation

Mos Def - The Ecstatic
Another album that got played to death this year. Mos goes super hard on this with the beats, with the lyrics, with the carefully picked collabos (Georgia Anne, Slick Rick). Work of a master. Don't sleep.

Elan Mehler - The After Suite
Brownswood keeps on supporting great new jazz. Elan Mehler and crew make great Lounge Lizards-reminiscent jazz and keep the craft alive. Looking forward to more from this cat.

Shafiq Hussein - In A Free Ka
While the Sa-Ra album had a couple powerful joints, it didn't hit all the high notes that Shafiq's solo record did. I guess he was holding stuff back? I dunno, but In A Free Ka has some serious perennial jams.

Little Dragon - After the Rain (GB Remix)
It's a shame the Little Dragon album didn't live up to the hype that this track (the first of theirs I'd ever heard) built up in me. But anyway this record is hard hitting and full of emotion. A true original. Cop it!

Joy Orbison - Hyph Mngo
Chuuuuunage! Joy Orbison humbly did the thing this year. On a recent GP episode he seemed really reluctant to say if any full-length album was forthcoming, but we all ask and hope we shall receive in the new year.

Hudson Mohawke -Gluetooth & Overnight
An end of the year entry, I just got on to this crew via our boy (and purveyor of best HK night-clubbage) DJ Kid Fresh. I will definitely be kicking down some hard-earned coins to these guys. Hard-hitting jammage!

So just like a second ago, OKSG wrote me to tell me that somewhere there was a new Erykah Badu & Lil Wayne track floating around somewhere. A bit of quick sleuthing proved that there was a very rough rough bit of this awesomeness. It's called "Jump in the Air and Stay There" and there are (according to the ever-reliable Okayplayer crew) ten different versions featuring ten different MCs and it's uncertain whether the track will make the album. Well, I, for one, can't wait to hear all ten, but a muffled version of one works for me for now. Hope it makes the cut.

This news comes on the heels of the glorious news (via Pinboard blog)that Miz Badu's album is pretty much "in the can" and will be dropping early next year. 2010 is already looking like fi-yah!

For some reason, I had been silently avoiding the debaucherous word jumble that is Mark Ronson's "Authentic Shit" East Village Radio show. But the other day,with nothing else to do, I revisited the show and was pleased to hear it was as shambolic as ever while still serving up the hot exclusive tracks -- like the one below.

I'd heard that Mark Ronson was creating a supergroup with indie faves Theodophilus London and Sam Sparro, but hadn't heard whether anything had come of it. Well something did and here it is. Like the show and indeed Mark himself, the track is kind of a mess, but I still love it and can't stop going back for more. Looking forward to more tracks from this act.

Admittedly, its a bit difficult to get excited about new hip hop in 2009. The genre which I once was so impassioned about (and still am to a certain degree) has suffered immeasurably in the last decade (decade and a half?)for various reasons. Still despite all of this and the tempting assertion that 'hip hop is dead,' I still do get excited when I hear a great verse over a hot beat, delivered oh so well, as only a handful of rappers, I feel can still pull off today. But lets face it, hip hop isn't dead. While the proclaimation that it is, was an interesting, perhaps necessary and thought provoking marketing strategy, it can't die. It simply can't. Why you may ask? As long as a new hip hop song is still maintaining those aforementioned and rather simple characteristics that make a hip hop song good, as well as staying creative by experimenting with and trying new things, it remains alive- not necessarily in the best shape overall, but alive nonetheless.

Jay Electronica is an emcee who I feel is staying true to the core elements of hip hop as well as being creative and new with it.

"Exhibit C" (produced by Just Blaze) is exhibit a of new hip hop today in 2009 still being able to produce songs that are alive....and well!

Broadcast is back!!!!!!!

Waking up the other morning to news of a new Broadcast album with another on the way was such a pleasant surprise as you already know how much i love this band. Im into this idea of flying under the radar and just surprising your fan base with news of an album. This one is a "mini - album" in collaboration with Focus Group. Sadly, Im going to miss their live show (check US dates here) once again as I will be out of town, yargggghh.

This track has been burning up my life since I first heard it on Joker's Sonar mix, and I
looked all over the nets for "fiiiiiiinalllleeeeee the weight is off my shoulders" to no avail. Finally, our trusty Fader crew has revealed the track to be the Joker remix of Simian Mobile Disco's new track "Cruel Intentions" featuring the fantabulous Beth Ditto (of The Gossip).

Black Milk "Losing Out" in Paris

Black Milk, putting on a good show here to an appreciative euro crowd in Paris. Nice rework of "losing out"- the drum reworking care of Daru, is reminiscent of the Roots "You Got Me" ending.
