Kendrick Lamar- OD (2010)

I'm so hyped on this new emcee, Kendrick Lamar, these days. First told you about him a couple months ago with this year's Section 80 mixtape/ album. Well, after playing that album out, I decided to go back to his first mixtape from last year and check it out. I'm glad I did because its just as good. O(verly).D(edicated). ~download here~ sees him rapping over some beats by the same producers who contributed to Section 80 and also a couple of instrumentals by the Legendary Roots Crew, such as the intro track here, which I've had on repeat for the past few days...

Drive - The Soundtrack

I this week saw the newest Ryan Gosling vehicle (no pun intended) Drive. To say it was intense would be an understatement. The most gripping part of the film though was not even the acting (though there was plenty of quality work, to be sure), it was the music. Gosling was quoted as saying that he wanted Drive to be "like a John Hughes movie with violence", and the soundtrack (compiled by accomplished film score composer Cliff Martinez) felt just that way, iconic 80s vibe with lots of dark and infectious beats. The last time a soundtrack clung to me like this was with Donnie Darko, but Drive's soundtrack is all the more haunting for being full of songs I had no previous association with.Take a listen to two of those great songs below and read more about the soundtrack here.

Oh and if you can take bloody Rambo-levels of violence, check out the movie too!

Three EPs for season's transition

Here are 3 EPs I'm recommending you all check out:

Robin Hannibal: Bobby EP

The producer from the amazing (and underrated) duo Quadron, produces and sings on some really soulful and slinky production here. Stream below...
Robin Hannibal - Bobby by Plug Research

Lunice: One Hunned (Lucky Me)

Like a synth rollercoaster thru the set of Blade Runner, this is full of some futuristic (what does that mean anymore, haa) bangers. It'll make you wanna get up and dance. Stream and cop here thru Bleep.com (they accept PayPal!)

Amp Live: You are not Human (The Love EP)

Have to admit, I was pleasantly surprised by this one here. The producer from hip hop group Zion I delves into some music concrete and jazz influences in this instrumental, dare I say "beat tape", excursion. Download for free here at his facebook.

enjoy

Badu Interview

Here is a nice lengthy interview by Out the Ox TV with Erykah Badu. You already know I'm a big fan.

Thundercat "The Golden Age of the Apocalypse" album stream

Arguably the album of the year right here, take a listen...

Actress giving away free trax

Actress' 'Splaszh' (Honest Jon's) was one of my favs last year. A real emotive, soulful and cerebral journey that I'm still playing on the regular. So it is to my delight that he has recently unleashed some tunes on his twitter.

go and grab em here

Thundercat "Shenanigans Pt 1" mix

We are eagerly anticipating the new Thundercat album to come out later this month on Brainfeeder. Thundercat, who is a frequent collaborator with the likes of Erykah Badu, Sa Ra and Flying Lotus, is a bass player whose work you've surely heard. On his debut album "The Golden Age of Apocalypse", produced by Flying Lotus, him and the band will sonically explore where fusion jazz legends like George Duke and Jaco Pastorius left off.

Until its release, you can check out this mix put together by FlyLo of some released and unreleased tracks the cat has played on.

Roche - Calcine VIbration

The homie Roche of Solos Records getting some love for his new track , "Calcine Vibration" over at XLR8R. I was lucky enough to get this track some time ago back in its demo stage when it was entitled "Smoke Weed Man Mix 2," hehe. Regardless of name, its still sounding as fresh as ever.
