Sum Summer Mixes

Summer is one of our favorite times of the year for obvious reasons. Whether you are relaxing on rooftops, in backyards, on the beach or just in your room, these are some excellent mixes that will make all that relaxing even more enjoyable.
Nguzunguzu - XLR8R mix
Nguzunguzu's mix of unique 'mythic' bass/ dance music will have you dancing at moments but mostly modding your head and grooving to the big sounds.
Flying Lotus - Lovers Melt 2
A follow up mix to his Lover's Melt podcast mix for Stones Throw, here Flying Lotus breaks out the soulful, funky and jazzy sounds mixing everything from Stevie Wonder to Curtis Mayfield, CAN and Donald Byrd. Alot of my favorites on here as well. This is a grand mix round these parts. [highly recommended]

Bilal "Levels" video directed by Flying Lotus
Stellar video for an already interstellar song, Flying Lotus at the director's helm and Special Problems knocked this one out the park..kudos!! The video continues where the "Mmmhmm" video left off. And overall, I feel like this is taking over from where the Soulquarians left off.
Featuring Bilal, Erykah Badu, Shafiq Husayn and Thundercat

Sound Species - Can We Call It Love? feat Ahu
the dudes of Sound Species
I don't know much about Sound Species besides the fact that they are out of UK, but Gilles Peterson has been riding for this track for a minute now and I've been feeeling it!
I finally got my hands on it, and immediately dropped it into the 2009 JAMS playlist. So dope.
It features Ahu (aka Dolly) who featured on some Flying Lotus tracks on (the epic) Los Angeles.
Check it!

Flying Lotus "Camel" (Nosaj thing Remix)

Don't know much about Nosaj thing, aside that he is amongst the bevy of talented LA electronic producers alongside Flying Lotus, Samiyam, Ras G, Free the Robots, the list goes on and on. Warp had him remix a track off Flying Lotus' Los Angeles (ahem, stay tuned for Ace to Ace Best of 2008 wrap up btw). Nosaj very tastefully uses some of the same samples from the original tune as well as adding his own flavor with some nicely chopped arrangements.

Dont sleep..Flying Lotus Los Angeles

thas the cover, crazy huh?
Flying Lotus' Los Angeles (Warp Records) album just came out yesterday(the big day for releases) and it is fire. Homeboy is straight taking shit to another level and the best thing about it is that in the tradition of great leaders he is putting all his homies on and leading the movement, not unlike Dre in the 90s putting on Snoop, WarrenG, etc.
Anyways, really go and support this, get on the wagon now before the band- starts setting up and before you gonna need a late pass like a lot of yall needed with Dilla.
ill leave yall with a sampling from the album:
alright "motherfucker...wordup" -Julia Louis Dreyfuss from skit on"The Vacation from Ourselves" off Wale Mixtape About Nothin

So James got me hooked on that other James, José James. If you're feeling him like I'm feeling him then right after you finish copping The Dreamer, click here and grab Gilles Peterson's free one hour podcast with the dude from last summer. I hope for big big things for this cat.
oksoundsgood addendum:
plus as a bonus, here goes the b side of the track that we posted yesterday called "Visions of Violet" produced by Flying Lotus. They are to be collabing on an album, that will be released on Blue Note!!! Y'all aint ready,wait.. Yall ready?

Jose James... get to know one!
Jose James is a young jazz vocalist from New York signed to Gilles Peterson's Brownswood Recordings. Affiliation with GP already says a lot, as the man commands a lot of respect with his great taste. Anyway James' album The Dreamer is very worthy of copping, and here is a video from one of the tracks from that album, a cover of Freestyle Fellowship's Park Bench People. Enjoy and look out for a collab album between Jose James and another one of the faves Flying Lotus.
update: here is the original Freestyle Fellowship version
