Best Ofs - 2008 (Camille's favorite songs)

I've been reading everyone's Best Of lists for weeks now and churning mine out in my head. So I figure now is a good time to start hammering them out.

Here are Camille's ten favorite songs of the year in no particular order (with corresponding videos/links):

1. Exile - In Love (actually I think this is my hands down favorite song of the year. so simple and earnest. i usually have to listen to this song two times in a row, at least)

2. Erykah Badu - Healer

The Healer/Hip Hop - Erykah Badu

3. Sam Sparro - American Boy (cover of Estelle track done on BBC)

4. Hercules & Love Affair - Blind (bringing disco house BACK. i MUST see this group live)

5. Jose James - Park Bench People

6. Santogold - Starstruck (Diplo Remix)

7. Jamie Liddell - Little Bit of Feel Good

8. Erykah Badu - Soldier
(this album is HEAT and the TRUTH)

9. Janelle Monae - Violet Stars Happy Hunting

10. Joel Alme - The Queen's Corner

Gilles Peterson(GP) rundown -09/24/08

I'm back in town and way jetlagged but I am feenin for new music, so I was lucky to get back in front of my computer on a fresh new GP day.

Here are my faves from this week's show

Lars Bartkuhn – ‘Goodbye Dancing Hello God’ (Sonar Kollektiv)

Jazzanova Feat. Jose James – ‘Little Bird’ (Verve)
A long sprawling mellow jazz track featuring my singer of the year.

Azymuth – ‘Butterfly’ (Far Out Recordings)
Funky funky stuff from Brazilian legends. The trio features Ivan Conti who collab'd with Madlib for the Jackson Conti project (check this!) earlier this year.

Kenny Garret Feat. Pharoah Saunders – ‘Sketches Of MD’ (Mack Avenue)
Accomplished sax player Kenny Garret drags out the legend Saunders for this popping little track.

Crown Heights Affair – ‘Dreaming A Dream’ (De Lite Records)
Good disco funk boogie that made me want to bust out some roller skates, flip out my hair, and get to the rink. I gotta get with this band.

Many new posts coming extra soon!

Jose James @ Central Park Summerstage

This is from last week in Central Park, NYC. What a great performance- wish i had been there, but this is second best with decent sound quality, yeah!

More José James

So James got me hooked on that other James, José James. If you're feeling him like I'm feeling him then right after you finish copping The Dreamer, click here and grab Gilles Peterson's free one hour podcast with the dude from last summer. I hope for big big things for this cat.

oksoundsgood addendum:
plus as a bonus, here goes the b side of the track that we posted yesterday called "Visions of Violet" produced by Flying Lotus. They are to be collabing on an album, that will be released on Blue Note!!! Y'all aint ready,wait.. Yall ready?

Jose James... get to know one!

Jose James is a young jazz vocalist from New York signed to Gilles Peterson's Brownswood Recordings. Affiliation with GP already says a lot, as the man commands a lot of respect with his great taste. Anyway James' album The Dreamer is very worthy of copping, and here is a video from one of the tracks from that album, a cover of Freestyle Fellowship's Park Bench People. Enjoy and look out for a collab album between Jose James and another one of the faves Flying Lotus.

update: here is the original Freestyle Fellowship version
