True nuff : Mos Def back to form

The other day I got a brief email from OKSG telling me that Mos was "back to form", there was a link attached but I didn't get a chance to click it. Skip to a few days later and I am on my second listen-through of Mos Def's new album The Ecstatic and I must concur that Mos is not half-steppin'. His flows are tight and the guests (Slick Rick, Georgianna Muldrow, Talib Kweli) and producers (Madlib, Chad Hugo, Preservation, J DILLA!!!) are top notch.

This album is heat and as much as OKSG hates me turning this blog into "hype of the moment" type blathery, I gotta big up it as already a 2009 classic -- fuck already a HIP HOP classic. It will be on steady BUMP this summer (and many other seasons to come) without doubt.

Stream it! Then cop it!

madvillain soon come!!

So, i know that hardly anyone is going to agree with this, but I feel that Madvillainy is probably the most important hip hop album and amongst the top 5 to come out in the last 7-8 years. So while we wait for the 2nd go around, I think we are really just waiting on Doom as its common knowledge that Madlib has beats for months, Madlib has taken it upon himself to remix the whole 1st project...which is pretty big news in my world. Hit Stones Throw up to check out the nice box treatment they are giving it, which is way outta my budget :(

check three of the remixes here:

Brain (via Analog Giant)
and
3.214 and Draino (via The Full Clip- a great blog milli hipped me to today)

Eat to Live video

IMO Talib Kweli sounds best when with Mos as Blackstar or over Madlib or Hi Tek beats, such as this track (produced by Madlib) off his last album. The song has an important message, especially in this age of childhood obesity.

Diplo gets mystic

Ronnie Foster's "Mystic Brew" emits summerness, the bassline is a classic , having been lifted for Tribe's "Electric Relaxation," yet another classic. Diplo has a go at that honey sweet bassline on his "Brew Barrymore," and its sounding nice- great summer time dance tune.

Also, check out the orginal, ATCQ "Electric Relaxation", and Madlib's visit as well.

The Joy of Click

So from the other day's post on Madlib's new project Jackson Conti, I clicked over to their Myspace where I scrolled through their top 8 and discovered something great. Thalma de Freitas is a Brazilian actress and carioca singer, member of Orquestra Imperial, and daughter of Brazilian music man Laercio de Freitas. I am still researching more on her. So while you wait for more raving enthusiasm about this new "discovery" you can watch this great video

or cruise on over to her Myspace for more tunage.

Mr. Madlib

So if you don't know by now that uber prolific producer/emcee Madlib is a musical genius than report to the principals office and get a late pass.

His latest project i
s a group called Jackson Conti, with legendary Brazillian drummer Ivan Mamão Conti of Azymuth. They play Brazillian standards that are all in an improvisational style. I'm partial to music of Brazil cause it has the ability to magically bring light to the shittiest of moods for me, but I think this is release of theirs entitled Sujinho, is something that everyone can vibe to.

Check out their little EPK:

and then just to show how disparate and versatile he is, check out this video from back in 2000 of another of 'lib's aliases, Quasimoto:
