Mayer Hawthorne & The County

I have no idea where I heard this song first, mighta been Gilles, all I know is when I heard it the other day on Mark Ronson's Authentic Shit podcast, I already knew the deal but had no idea who the artist was. Turns out it is Stone Throw's very own Mayer Hawthorne (aka Haircut) & The County, doing something on an old school tip...and doin it very well (though slightly tongue in cheek).

I can't find much on the dude or the band online (besides the obligatory myspace, linked above)so I'm tossing the track up so you can just judge it for yourself.

So, i know that hardly anyone is going to agree with this, but I feel that Madvillainy is probably the most important hip hop album and amongst the top 5 to come out in the last 7-8 years. So while we wait for the 2nd go around, I think we are really just waiting on Doom as its common knowledge that Madlib has beats for months, Madlib has taken it upon himself to remix the whole 1st project...which is pretty big news in my world. Hit Stones Throw up to check out the nice box treatment they are giving it, which is way outta my budget :(

Dâm-funk

Dâm-Funk is a cat out of LA making "early-'80s styled Boogie, Modern Soul and Electro-Funk" music. He makes all this music sans samples, which means he is an OG with it. On top of that, he seems to be like the coolest, most humble dude.

If this aint some summertime music to cruise to, I dont know what is. Here is a tune called "Rollin" from his upcoming full length.

Karriem the Dream

Not often do I return to podcasts after listening to them for the first week or so, the majority of them seem to be made with an invisible expiration date. But once in a while, a podcast really pulls me in and i continue listening again and again.

Such is the case with the Stones Throw Karriem Riggins podcast(recorded live at Miami's Winter Music Conference). Here in this 40 minute podcast Karriem Riggins, a jazz/ hip hop drummer, producer and emcee, starts off with some great soul/ jazz selections before getting into his own beats (which are completely and ridiculously off the hook) at around the 7 and a half minute mark. The fact that he is a drummer definitely leads to some head nodding funky productions that have incredible swing.
